It has been a week since Alex Chilton (Big Star, Box Tops) died, and along with the deceased Jay Lindsey (aka Jay Reatard) , it has been a hard time of recent for Memphis rockers. Jay always seemed a bit like Alex.
They both started in the music business as teenagers, although Chilton had a #1 hit to his name at the age of 16. But Chilton was a lifer, and at the age of 59, he was still doing Big Star reunion shows. The same could be said of Lindsey if you were to read the tea leaves and look down the road.
And with the release of the Big Star box set Look to the Sky, there is still plenty of Chilton to digest. The same could be said of Lindsey who was a single producing machine. There is no doubt dozens, maybe hundreds of Jay Reatard songs waiting to be released. We can only hope it won’t take 30 years to finally hear them.
So listen Thursday night from 10 p.m. to midnite, Alex Chilton and Jay Reatard will sprinkled throughout.
All the best,
Matt Noonan
